Guided Revision

Re-vision. To look upon a piece with new eyes.

In this class, I’ll guide you through a very detailed, sentence-level revision of a short piece. We’ll worry over every word and polish our sentences until they sing. (Revision is suitable for any piece, but for our purposes, this probably will work best for pieces around 1000 words; one that you’ve already taken a few swipes at.)

I’ve found the more limiting the form, the more fun it can be. Flash is the pencil’s playground. Let me introduce you to some new forms that will spark your creativity.

In this hour and a half class, we’ll take a look at how the short form (500-1000 words) makes use of unusual structures. We’ll marvel at the beauty of small in and of itself and I’ll give you a couple of prompts for experimental forms to help breathe new life into your writing practice.

Once Upon a Flash

  • Coming Soon

In uncertainty, we cling to that which feels familiar and returns us to the simplicity of childhood—hot cocoa, fuzzy blankets, fairy tales. After all, the world is still full of wolves, of wicked stepmothers, of spindles that prick and apples that poison. In this class, we’ll take a look at timeless fairy tale tropes (dark woods, impossible tasks, shapeshifting, etc.) and subvert them for our own small tales: flash, short-shorts, postcard, prose poems, fictional and non. No matter what you call it, we’ll review the basics of short forms (characterization, imagery, conflict) and worry word count as we make our own tales.

We’ll read small works from Angela Carter, Anna Cabe, Peter Markus, and Claudia Rankine, among others, and challenge ourselves to look at language anew through writing exercises. At the end of the class, each student will have at least one shiny, new piece (under 1,000 words) to share for feedback.

Maybe you’re hard at work on a novel (me too!) or something shorter and feel stuck. Maybe you want a crash course in creating realistic dialogue. Or want someone to hold you accountable during your revision process. Sometimes it helps to talk through the sticky parts. Let’s talk about how we can breath new life into your work with goals tailor made for where you are right now.
